Weekend update and the fun of machining

Nothing really exciting to report. I spent the weekend machining large pieces of metal into smaller pieces. We have shipped the test MP-44 trunnions to Pete and while we are waiting for his report back we are filling our time working on making stamping dies. In this case all the pieces are sized and we […]

MP-44 trunnions finish op 6

We have finished operation 6 on the MP-44 trunnions. The reason that we started with 6 samples was to insure that we would have correct samples when we finished. Two of the trunnions ended up out of spec after we finished this operation. The drawings and cam programing were changed to correct and problems. These […]

Continuing the MP-44 trunnion

We have just completed the first operation 6 on the trunnion. It has also pointed out a few minor differences. When we started this project all we had was an original trunnion in very bad condition and a collection of out of spec drawings with incorrect dimensions.

Later a trunnion in very good […]

MP-44 Trunnions up date

We have now finished the first six test pieces up to the 5th operation. This next week we will complete op’s 6 and 7 and send them for verification for proper fit.

With the first 5 operations completed we will be starting on op6 soon. This is a master cam simulation of the process.

MP-44 trunnion part 2

The next machining operation has been completed on the trunnion. This is one of the many unexpected problems with reverse engineering a component. The magazine did not fit. An error occurred that was missed. It is a good thing to check after every step which we do.

You can see the differences here and it […]

Reverse Engineering and machining the MP-44 trunnion

Here at Gun Lab we do a fair amount of reverse engineering, most of what we like to make have no drawings. However when there are drawings or solid models available we will use them. With this said I have found that most of what is available on the internet or in books is just […]

Update on the cnc router

In a past post you were shown a solid model picture of what the new base would look like.

You were also shown a picture of the parts being milled to correct size.

Here are a few pictures of the parts after they were cut and tapped.

These are the legs and cross […]

Upgrading the cnc router

While messing around with the cnc router a number of problems were noted. Part of this last week and into next week we are correcting these problems and upgrading the router.

First on the list is a new table for the router. The original one has so much movement that we actually have chatter marks […]

Making the AR-180B bolt hold open button

This post is about making the pivot button for the bolt hold open device for the AR-180B.

With no engineered drawings to work from the first item of business to take care of was making a drawing of the part with all the dimensions. To do this we used micrometers, feeler gauges and an […]
