With this post we are going to discuss the stock.
The first set of pictures will be the plastic stock. You can see the parting line on the stock from where it was injected molded.
This is a picture of a completed and mounted stock showing the same area.
A close up of the stock mounting piece as stamped.
This is a picture with the butt plate attached.
This is the blanking operation to start with the making of the stock latch.
This is the pattern and stock blank for the wood stock ar-180
The actual wood stock. I did not even know that Armalite made a wood stock AR-180
If anyone has a wood stock AR-180 I would love to post pictures of it.
So, they used wood furniture beyond the prototype stage? What did they do for the handguard? If they only used wood during development, I imagine the handguard and grip would resemble the furniture found on the AR16.
Thanks for sharing Chuck!
I would really like to see a wood stock AR-180. I would be interested in the type of hand guards it had.
I know that they built a few wood stocked monstrosities called the Phil Hart Sporter. It utilized a thumb hole stock and was an effort to make a more civilized version of the 180. Not many were made so they don’t come up for sale often but one just sold on gunbroker for $2795. I was unaware of any other wood stocked AR180’s other than the wood hand guards used on some AR-18S models.
You find the coolest stuff. Keep up the great work.

WOW, I never knew there was a 180 site. Just went there and lots of good info. I will be spending some time there this evening. Thanks for posting.
I just started it a month or so ago and I am a complete WordPress newb so I still need to work on the layout and stuff.
I don’t post as often as I would like but I try to have good content and I love to take pictures.
I’m hoping to get out to the desert and test fire my shorty project soon. It needs the exercise as much as I do.
What desert are you near.
North West Tucson. I usually head west on Arva Valley road past Pump Station road. I know a spot out that way.
Talking about wooden furniture … off topic but kinda funny … check this:

I thought that the Phil Hart Sporter was unattractive, until I looked at the AK47 at the above link.
What is the rigidity of this folding stock attaching method ?
The folding stock is even patented in US3369316A patent (look it up on google patents)
I surprised that Arthur Millers patent for the buttstock hinge wasn’t filed until 1966. What about the AR16 and the Stoner 63? They used the same hinge design…
