Italian Vetterli-Vitali M1870-87

This rifle from the reference collection is a Italian Vetterli-Vitali M 1870-87. It was made in 1880 as stamped on the left side of the barrel. It is a magazine conversion of the M1870 single shot rifle. This conversion consisted of a metal shroud around the magazine housing, removing the dust cover and installing a knurled knob on the bolt to close of the magazine to allow single shot firing. Cut Away Model 38 Carcano carbine

This rifle was on the last Rock Island auction. Unfortunately I was not the winner of the bid. However, it is a beautiful example of an interesting piece.

It would make a great addition to an Italian or cut away collection.

Rare Carcano rifle

In my youth I had the opportunity to look at and take a couple of pictures of a very rare Carcano rifle. Judging on the way I look, with hair and all and not that many wrinkles, these pictures were taken 35 years ago or so. It is not often that you get to see something as rare as this and I wish I would have taken a few more pictures. This is a Moschetto Model 1891 (carbine)

F.N.A.-B model 1943 submachine gun

Of all the submachine guns that I have played with or examine I find the F.N.A.-B model 1943 to be one of the very interesting ones. This submachine gun was design and made by Fabbrica Nazionale d’Armie in Brescia,Italy between the years 1943 and 44. The entire receiver was machined out of bar stock making it very costly to build.

It is interesting how the entire fire control group is attached to the upper portion of the receiver and the lower housing is just a shell.

A great deal of time was spent machining this weapon out. It is a beautiful weapon.

Italian AZ-49 submachine gun

I was going through some of the pictures that I have taken in the past and found these. This sub machine gun was made by S.A.M.T. of Rome. It is reported to have been design by Toni and Zorzoli Giandoso in 1944. Never being produced in quantity, approximately 6000 were made, it is none the less an interesting combination of Sten, M-3 grease gun and Beretta.

You can see the grip safety that was used on the magazine housing.

The tooling was sold at the end of the war to Burma and made there.

This is the bolt that you looked at yesterday.

The ring on the back is to cock the bolt.

You can see where the hammer travels through the bolt and strikes the firing pin. This rifle fires from a closed bolt.

It goes to the Beretta model 1918/30 carbine in 9mm Glisenti. It is a cartridge similar to the 9×19 but of much less powerful, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9mm_Glisenti.

You can see the similarity to the Beretta model 38 smg bolt.

9mm Luger ammunition will fit and fire in this weapon but should not be used.

It was a well made carbine using a forged and machined receiver.

It was generally issued as a police carbine.
