I am starting back with a weekly post of guns from the reference collection. I hope you enjoy them.

This is a Nepalese Enfield rifle.

This rifle has now gone to the Pattern Room to be added to there permanent collection.

Here are a few of the interesting items that I found at Dealer Showroom.

The first and really exciting item is a brand new AR-10 Sudanese hand guard.

There are still 2 of them left.

I am working on a couple of Enfield projects and was able to pick up a few items toward completing them.

I also found a missing piece to my Mk7 Enfield.

I also came across some 15 rd Hotchkiss feed strips.

And a 22lr Enfield barrel.

This as well as some very interesting books and rifles. That will be in later posts.

Cut away weapons

By now most of you that come to this site know that I have a thing about cut away weapons. They are a great tool in understand how weapons work and in my case allow me to see the functioning of the guns that we make. I own a number of cut away weapons and have photograph a number of other ones as well. As I am always on the look out for them I thought I would share some of them that are currently available at the Cowan Auction house.

1945 Lithgow 22 trainer

John a friend of Gun Lab recently sent me some pictures of an addition to his collection as he knows that I have a thing for 22 trainers. This is a Lithgow SMLE 111* rifle that is in 22 lr. According to the available references on this rifle they were put together by Jovino in the 1980’s. Still it is a very nice rifle and something I would love to own or build. Now on to the bolt.

You can see the off set firing pin hole for a 22lr rim fire round.

Just a quick look at what the print for a new bolt head would look like. It would be an interesting build.

The rifle was a single shot only and the magazine body was use to catch the ejected cartridges.

Still with the standard brass butt plate.

Converted Rifles

In this segment we are going to discuss rifles that were converted from one caliber to another to allow them to be used by the country that captured them or to convert them for training. I first got interested in this after reading about the Cuban revolution and the weapons that they used.This first segment will deal with the British rifles that were converted from 303 to 7.92×57 by the Turkish military. Two types of British rifles were known to have been converted. They were the Charger loaded Lee-Enfield and the MK3 SMLE. This set of pictures deals with the SMLE.

This rifle was converted at the Ankara arsenal and is marked on the top of the receiver with the Turkish star and cresent and year. The changes the rear sight has been changed to 2000 meters Mauser leaf type. The front bands, cleaning rod nose cap and bayonet boss have been changed to a Mauser type. The Magazine has been converter to a Mauser type and the charging bridge has been re-shaped to use a 7.92×57 type clip. There has also been added a strengthening rib added to the side of the receiver.

This is the locking device and recoil spring guide for the 7.63×25 Howard Francis carbine. There is only one prototype that is known to have been made in late 1943. It uses a No.1 Mk3. receiver and was converted to a semi-automatic magazine fed carbine.

This rifle is on the bucket list to make. So I started by buying a couple of drill purpose rifles.

I then removed the charger clip guide.

And after machining.

More to come on this project. It took a back seat to the VG1-5 project.

It is just to cute not to have one.

Shooting the 410 Enfield shotgun

After working non stop for almost two weeks my friend Mac and myself decided to take a break and do a little shooting. I needed to test the 410 Enfield shotgun for accuracy, so off we went with that and 3 other weapons. We had a great time with the little Enfield. The accuracy is what you would expect with a smooth bore gun using ammunition that was made in what looks like in 1960.

The target was shot at 30 yards.

This is after two strings for grouping.Not much difference.

However, I would not want to be hit by one of these slugs. It had not problem going through a 2×4 at all.

And was a danger to close up cans.

It also put a heck of a dent into a 1/4″ steel plate.

I actually had more fun shooting this then the two machine guns that were taken or the sniper rifle.

Weekend update 9-8-14

This update has to do with some ammo that I just received. I had ordered a couple of cases of .410 shotgun musket ammo for the Enfield 410 shotgun from Dan’s Sporting Goods. These are some great people to deal with. It was a very pleasant experience to say the least and they will have my business again. Here are some pictures of the ammo as it was shipped and out of the package. The head stamp indicates that it has come from India. I have fired 10 rounds so with no problems indicated. I know that that is not much shooting to verify anything, however a complete shooting session will be in the future.

I found it interesting how much the case expanded after firing.

The ammo came wrapped in 10 round bundles and packaged inside of a wooden box.

Now as for the rifle that I used and a few close up pictures of some interesting items on the weapon.

My rifle is in very good condition with a couple of repairs to the stock. It was made in 1949 and is marked RFI.The magazine has been removed and a wooden filler block installed in it’s place with a metal feed ramp to allow loading the cartridge.

The rear sight has been riveted so there is no adjustment for elevation, not that you would need any.

Here are a few more pictures of the rifle.

I have a quick video of me shooting it in the test fire tube. As you can see there not much recoil and the noise is minimal using the tube.

I am still trying to get the bugs worked out on the voice over.
