SAR show 2017

Well the SAR show is over and everyone is now heading home or all ready there. This is the run down from the entire weekend.

Starting on Wednesday we have a little pre SAR machine gun shoot. Everything went perfect with the shoot, the weather was absolutely the best with a little cloud cover and no wind. Once again we took out the Gerat 06 rifles for everyone to try out. There were the usual MG42’s and 34’s, Brens and Lewis guns, a very nice 08 Maxim, 1919’s as well as a few cannons. And an assortment of sub-machine guns. Everyone had a great time.

At the show I was able to obtain some more for the Farquhar Hill rifle. I still need a bolt. If anyone knows where one is at please let me know.

I also picked up a few examples for the reference collection.

Some more books and manuals were also gotten for the library.

The Saturday pizza party went over very well. A number of people brought some very interesting items to show everyone.

In addition the new Cetme L was also at the show and party. I had an opportunity to shoot it at the Wednesday shoot. I can’t wait to get one. It looks and functions great.

It was a great show, a great party and a great shoot. I am counting down the days until the next show.

I was able to obtain a number of books for my reference library from John. I think the hardest item that he let go was some of his books.

Some of the books are English, some are not. There are hard back books, magazines, soft back books and technical manuals. There are even a couple for a young friend just starting the collector road. It was a good book trip. Contact John for your book needs.

And there are great new books that have just come out or coming out.

I remember when the only information was “small arms of the world” or “Janes infantry weapons” Then Collector grade came on to the seen and things really started to change for the better.

Still information was lacking on the weapons that people had little interest in. Even now that has changed. Take for instance the Carcano rifle. There was nothing written about it forever. Now look at the information available.

My first book that I found on the Carcano was the paper back book by Richard(Dick) Hobbs. I bought mine from Dick over 30 years ago. It was a gold mine of information that was not any where else. There are just a few black and white pictures. The majority of the pictorial references are line drawings.

Next while overseas I happen to come across an Italian book on this same weapon. The original engineering drawings in the book are hard to read,yet the information available is priceless.

I don’t read Italian but the pictures and information in this book is invaluable.

Then two separate books have come out in the last couple of years. This book not only covers the Carcano rifle but it is one of the few references to early semi auto rifles from Italy. Now a new book has come out that I just received. I am going to tell you right now that this book is GREAT!

The color pictures are really very good and some of the information in this book I have never seen anywhere else. Take for example the post I made a while back about the engraved and gold plated presentation rifle. This book has 5 pages dealing with this rifle only.

The book “Fabricacion De Fusiles”

A while back I was able to obtain a few books that I did not have in the reference library. I have a thing about not only gun books but also machining and manufacturing books. So what could be better then a book about manufacturing guns. This book was written in 1899 and is about the making of the Mauser rifle in Spain. It is not the complete set of books dealing with the manufacturing of the rifle just the pictorial reference of the tooling and machinery necessary to make it. Generally the rest of the set would be the step by step operation as well as a set of drawings.

In the book ” Argentine Mauser Rifles 1871-1959″ in chapter 24 you can see what the rest of the set would look like.

This is the book that I just picked up.

Basically this book is the pictorial reference to the machines and tooling necessary to make the Mauser rifle.

The dimension on the drawings are for the fixture sizes.

Most of the pages deal with line drawings of what the tool, fixture or machine would look like.

Even down to the type of cutters you would use.

It is an interesting reference in the building of the Mauser rifle.

SAR Gun Show final report

Well the show was a great success. The party was a great success. Fun was had by all. Now on to the details.

I was able to obtain an additional 60 barrels for the VG1-5, 05 and 06 projects.

Books,Books and more Books. I am a book nut and will buy books over guns all most any time. Here is the run down of books new and old that I found.

I did not have this one in the collect and one day I will have an Adams revolver in the reference collection.

Another Bruce Canfield book.

This is a great translation of a Russian manual. You can get this manual for 30.00 plus shipping from Martin Ivie at ivie.martin@att.net

My copy of Single shot rifles finally gave up and I needed a new copy.

I remember when this book first came out and I had no money to buy it.

I enjoy Bruce Canfield’s books and get his new one when they come out.

A couple of interesting items like a Stoner M63 bolt and extractor, no I do not own a Stoner just like to study parts.
