I’d like to know if the gas pressure chamber is delaying the opening of the breach or just acting as a buffer to its rearward travel ?

Probably requires scientific test apparatus beyond your budget though. I wonder if they worked this out when it was designed ?

It might be interesting to see what happens with no gas ports if you have a test rifle you don’t mind damaging ?

It would deviate from the original, but cutting ejection port in bolt cover could mitigate this problem ?

Even short one, like 1 inch or so long, coupled with some brass deflector end, would help, imo.
