Timberline Hawk survival rifle

Not much is known about the company Timer Line Hawk. So this is as much of a history as I could gather. The registered agent of the company was John A. Mc Gerty and the filing date was March 29,1983. It was a company formed initially by four men to take over the assets of the old Armalite company when they closed their doors. Initially they did the warranty work for Armalite on the AR-180 and 18. What is not generally known is that they also design and built guns other than the AR180 series rifles. This article is about such a rifle. This is the 2 shot rotating barrel 22lr survival rifle.

There are a few draw backs to this rifle. The first is that the point of aim is different for the two barrels. The second is that you have to be careful when loading as it is easy to get the cartridge not properly placed to allow the action to close.

Looking at the end you can see the machined area for the extractor.

The barrels are actually AR-7 barrel liners.

The retaining notch is cut in behind the made in USA. Looking at the machining of this notch you can see that these were prototype weapons only.

This is a limited prototype weapon that I don’t think ever went into serious production. The number on this rifle is 42 and it is the only one that I have ever seen or heard about. There were a few spare barrels assemblies made, I have one in my collection.

This rifle came out during a time period when small light weight survival rifles were all the rage.

Ermawerke Carbine

During the last days of WW2 the Germans made a variety of weapons for the Volkssturm. The Ermawerke is one that has been in a number of books but no one has ever touched one. This is the general write up of that weapon.

John , a friend of gun lab, just sent us an information package of a limited made reproduction being produced.

This is a bolt to the Brondby rifle in 7.62×25.

It was another trials rifle that was made in limited numbers.

The rifle fired from an open bolt ,which unfortunately means that I can not made one here. It is a gas operated rifle that uses a vertical cam locking mechanism.

The Czech model 52 police carbine

I am not sure what to call this rifle. It started out as a Czech model 52 rifle in 7.62×45 with a 10 round magazine. Now it is a 7.62×39 carbine that uses ak-47 magazines and drums. It was a blast to shoot and handle. Here are some pictures of it.

The first few pictures show the rifle without any magazine to give you an overview of the design.

Now with a 20 round magazine.

EM-2 30-06 rifle

During the time period that the EM-2 was design it was made in a variety of calibers. These calibers ranged from the original caliber of .280 to the NATO standard of 7.62×51 through 30/06. This post is dealing with the 30/06 rifle. Basically what they did was to cut and weld a 7.62×51 rifle to convert it to 30/06 as a trials weapon. This is the only one that I know of and it makes for an interesting study in cartridge conversion.

This picture is from the book EM-2 concept and design published by Collector Grade Publications, a must have book in any gun library. It shows the different lengths of bolts in the three calibers.

A great deal of work, but an interesting project.

EM-2

A rifle that I have been interested in for quite some time is the EM-2. It is one of those rare rifles that you read about but generally don’t have a chance to see, examine or shoot. I have had the opportunity to do all three.

To start all of the rifles came with a fitted wooden box holding the rifle and it’s accessories.

You will notice that it comes with 6 magazines,bayonet,sling,grenade launcher, cleaning kit and winter trigger,which is missing from this box. It just looks like the center piece for a gun collection.

So lets chat about this set up.

First thing is that the rifle is a bull pup design and was initially made in .280 and later made in what was to become the NATO standard, 7.62×51.Here is a picture of the two of them together.

This rifle that was are looking at is the NATO standard version.

One of the first things you notice is the wood veneer on the rifle receiver where you rest you cheek. With the machining and wood veneer it looks more like a custom built sporting rifle then a military contract rifle.

The next item that really sticks out is the low power scope that comes attached to the rifle.

Another component that sticks out is the beautifully made hand guard.

Now to leave the art portion of this weapon to the more practical. The grenade launching sights are built in and the front sight automatically cuts of the gas system.

And the rear sight is built is as well.

The safety is in a well design location, in front of the trigger guard.

The cartridge deflector is machined into the receiver.

The machining on this rifle is something to admire.

Steyr sheet metal rifle

I had the opportunity to visit with Mel Smith and look at some very interesting weapons from his collection. Today’s write up is about one of the most interesting ones. This is a Steyr bolt action sheet metal stamped prototype rifle. This rifle was made as a contender to replace the 98 mauser. It was made to be produced with less expensive sheet metal stamping instead of the usual forged and machine method of making a rifle.

Studding this rifle I can tell you that the stamping dies and equipment would have been extensive. It is truly a work of art. I hope you enjoy the photo essay.

Starting with the rifle.

Now for the receiver.

The sheet metal in that receiver is thick. The tonnage for that pressing would be quite large.

Just look at that pressing.
